You have heard so much about our crazy road trip and even crazier frugal life from Somer’s perspective. But what does her husband think? Well let me tell you!

Hey, I’m Travis – Somer’s husband. You may have seen or heard some of my thoughts during our trip, but maybe you’re wondering, what does he think of all of this?

Now that we are home, I want to share my three biggest takeaways from our trip.

Is Frugal Living Worth It?

To start, I want to go back to before we left for our life-changing road trip. When Somer brought up the idea of traveling the country for a few months, I had doubts. I’m a very practical and rational thinker. The idea of an extended road trip seemed like the opposite of those things. But I was quickly proved wrong. My first takeaway is if you live below your means your money can go so much farther than you ever imagined. I honestly didn’t think our trip would last more than a month or two, financially speaking. All those doubts were proved wrong because Somer showed me what a frugal mindset looks like even on the road. She found ways to get endless free meals though sign-up freebies. She taught me how easy it is to make extra money through apps and websites. She demonstrated how to make easy meals on the go, and never waste food. Don’t doubt the power of a frugal life. You can really stretch your dollars with a frugal mindset.

A Change In Perspective

My second takeaway is a brand-new perspective on parenting and how Somer feels as a mom. I remember coming home from my full-time job months ago. Somer was often feeling tired and stressed from being with the kids all day. I would tell her I understood how she felt, but I did not fully understand because I wasn’t experiencing it. After spending months with my kids, every day and every night, I can now say I do understand the pure exhaustion a stay-at-home mom experiences. Now that we are home, I truly believe this perspective will change how I parent, as well as change how I view Somer as a mom. I don’t plan to go back to a typical nine to five job, but if I ever do, I can honestly say I will be equipped to help and care for my wife in ways I never could before.

My Challenge For You

My final takeaway is more of a challenge to myself and to you. Take the step to try that thing you have always wanted to do. Maybe that means going on a big road trip with your family or starting that business you’ve always dreamed of. Maybe it’s quitting your job that is lacking purpose, committing to a more frugal lifestyle, and finding something that allows more time with your family. I am not advising you to be completely reckless, but I am challenging you to evaluate your life and ask yourself why not?

I was lacking purpose in my job. I am thankful we made a change to spend more time as a family. I am thankful I can work side by side with Somer as we try to make our frugal life an actual business. I am thankful for a wife who grows with me, constantly challenging me to ask why not?
